Steady and flashing lights mean different things
A steady light often means the control system stored a fault that should be diagnosed soon. A flashing check-engine light commonly signals an active misfire severe enough to risk catalytic-converter damage. Reduce load, stop safely, and seek guidance rather than continuing to drive it hard.
If the vehicle also has low oil pressure, overheating, heavy smoke, strong fuel odor, or severe shaking, shut it down when safe.
A trouble code is the beginning of diagnosis
An OBD code names a circuit, operating condition, or detected performance problem. It does not prove that the component named in the code has failed. Wiring, connectors, vacuum leaks, mechanical condition, power supply, software strategy, and other systems can produce the same code.
Preserve the evidence
Note when the light appeared, fuel level, weather, speed, load, recent fueling, repairs, and any change in performance. Avoid disconnecting the battery or clearing codes before testing; that can erase freeze-frame data and readiness information that help recreate the fault.
Expect tests that confirm the cause
A technician may scan multiple modules, review live data, inspect wiring and hoses, test power and ground, check fuel or ignition performance, and verify the repair under the conditions that set the code.
The code is useful information. The value comes from interpreting it in context and testing before parts are replaced.
